Backups & Storage Solutions
Do you have a disaster recovery plan for your company data? Is it safe guarded from fire, theft, corruption, hardware failure?
Any data that is of importance to you should be protected from loss or damage. Choosing the right backup solution is dependent on 4 main factors:
Capacity |
The Backup media must be large enough to store all your critical data now and into the future as this amount will only increase in size. |
Automation |
Having your backup system scheduled to start / stop / send reports automatically means they can run after hours and run unattended, saving time and money. |
Price |
Certain backup systems can provide superior advantages but they often come with an increased price tag. |
Speed |
Most data is typically in use during business hours and meaning an after-hours backup is usually required. Depending on the amount of data being backed up, an appropriate system must be used to ensure the backup process completes before the next business day. |
Tape Drives versus USB Portable Hard Drives

Tape
Tape has been the most reliable and utilized form of backup media to date. For decades it has been used by small businesses, corporations and government agencies to safe guard themselves from data loss.
So why use tape?
Tape’s most noticeable benefit over the years has been its ability to backup mass amounts of data at speed. For this reason it is still heavily used within places of business that must retain a multitude of information. When there is only a small window of time after hours to run a backup, this can be very handy.
However its downside has always been a huge impact for small business. And that is the high expense of maintenance. Tape drives need regular cleaning. Tape media should also be replaced every 12 months if they are used on a weekly cycle. And restoring data is not always a user friendly task. In most instances where we have been employed to do an appraisal of a small business office network, the tape backup system has not been functioning for some time. This more often results from the task of looking after the tape backups being too difficult or cumbersome for the person in charge.
The alternative to tape - USB Hard Drive
Technology is forever improving and so there are always new ways of storing data appearing. It would be a challenge to find someone still listening to music on their cassette Walkman™. We all use MP3 players these days. With Backups for small business the solution is USB portable hard drives. They currently store over 2000 gigabytes of data with this limit increasing monthly.
Benefits include:
- Plug and play feature (can be used on any PC)
- Inexpensive
- High capacity
- Zero maintenance
- High speed backup
- High speed restore
These devices are fast becoming the ideal choice for reliable off-site backups. For the large majority of small businesses, USB hard drives is what Rampant Technology recommends.
R.A.I.D. (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Devices)
RAID’s in a basic sense are a bunch of hard disk drives logically joined together to create a single drive that MS-Windows can talk to. The primary function of this system is to protect you from hard disk failure. If a disk in the array fails, the system continues to run and the failed unit is physically replaced with zero loss of data. There are a range of different RAID designs, all having their pros & cons. The easiest one to understand is the mirror RAID known in the tech world as RAID1 (figure 1).
All servers housing data should have this RAID at a minimum.
